CeRCCa: Center for Research and Creativity Casamarles, Spain

  • Seth Sexton LLC llorenc del penedes spain (map)

CeRCCa facilitates living and working space for artists, curators and cultural researchers interested in temporarily being part of the context of Llorenç del Penedès. Through its A.I.R Program CeRCCa supports research and creative practices that are interdisciplinary, collaborative and site specific. So far, CeRCCa has promoted artistic and research projects that reflect upon and interact with the local context, as well as projects that have a critical approach to contemporary issues.

Each year CeRCCa organizes three A.I.R Programs that last for approximately two months. For each residency period three to four artists are selected. During that period the artists and researchers share the space, live and work together. The structure of the program also enforces dialogue and collaboration in and out of the artistic framework.

In order to facilitate mutual knowledge both from the different creative perspectives of the artists and the different realities of Llorenç del Penedès, CeRCCa organizes presentations by the artists and the organizers of the program during the first week of the residency. Often these presentations are the starting point to discuss the practice of each artist, becoming a key element for future collaborations.

Depending on the necessities of each artist or researcher, the organizers become the nexus between them, the local community and the different local and regional organizations and institutions that could help and benefit from their initiatives.

CeRCCa also has facilitated a series of cultural visits to local and regional organizations as well as to different artistic production centers and other A.I.R programs in Catalonia. These activities were accompanied by guided tours and informal meetings with different cultural agents that worked as networking visits and potentially became the seed for future collaborations.

The residency also promotes the selected artists and researchers with the organization of and participation in workshops, local festivals and events, in addition to the documentation of their projects on CeRCCa’s web archive.

Outcome

At the end of each residency, CeRCCa organized a public presentation of the projects that had been developed. These public presentations toke the format of artist talks, open studios, interventions in public space or exhibitions at the local art gallery or the Cultural House of the village. Depending on the interest of the artists, the public presentation toke place in a gallery, cultural space or festival in the region or in Barcelona.
